It is a beautifully written piece of creative non-fiction that is much more than the story of a daughter caring for a mother with Alzheimer's. Edwards unwraps the mystery of her mother's past to discover the tragedy that befell the Istrians, a little known group of people (at least in Canada). As a daughter developing compassion for a critical mother and a writer and researcher of Italian stories, Edwards is able to give the reader insight into her mother's life in a way no one else could. It's a compelling story by an accomplished Edmonton author. This is a book club favourite. Edwards has attended book club meetings when her book is being discussed to answer questions!
