Kateryn Parr was madly in love with Thomas when she caught the eye on King Henry VIII. She could refuse neither his attentions nor his marriage proposal, and thus became his sixth and final wife. Her story brought to life the commitment people had to the king; he was considered divine, therefore his decisions and commandments were infallible. They also knew him to be petty and unforgiving; if he felt slighted or even bored, he did not hesitate to order them killed. The debasement they consented to in order to escape his bad graces was profound. Her story also highlighted her intellect and scholarly work on interpreting the Bible for common people. Great minds were regularly invited to speak to her and her ladies, and they ardently discussed the ideas and the wording to best capture the nuances of meaning. An interesting picture of the times.
