This author went beyond my expectations. It was great!!! Hope to see more books from him.
For a first book, I thought this was very interesting and well written. I'm looking forward to reading others in this series.
This was well written. Lovely & descriptive writing of both scenery & people. I'm interested in reading another Mike Bowditch story. I'm hoping Mike develops & matures. Sure hope he doesn't become one of those grumpy, intolerant, dysfunctional lawmen who have stopped telling right from wrong & have to do everything their way. Looking forward to seeing how he goes.
Well-written. Sometimes too much information, but overall an easy, interesting story with twists.
This first in a series about Main game warden Mike Bowditch is quite stirring and well worth reading. I can see why Paul Doiron won an award for the inaugural book. I also read book number two (Trespasser) and was very impressed by it too. C.J. Box has a definite rival in Paul Doiron.
I'm not sure if I didn't enjoy this book as much as Dark Little Falls and his other works, simply because it was the first book of the Mike Bowditch Series and I had already read two others out of order. I felt it was well written but it was dragging to get to the climax. I wasn't that impressed with this book but then later I found out it was his very first novel. Not my favorite but I am looking forward to him writing another one of the Mike Bowditch Mystery Novels.
Didn't find the main character's reactions authentic for a 23-year-old.
Excellent thriller by a new author. Some parts of the book, particularly in the early going seem to bog down a bit, but it all comes together well once the story takes flight. The characters are engaging, the sense of place is wonderful. Call this book the revenge of the East. Clearly points out that not all the wild country is in places like Wyoming or the southwest. Northern Maine is as wild as it gets. The really good news is that this is the first book in a series.
Excellent read - really enjoyed this book - looking forward to whatever else Paul Doiron publishes.
Great first book by this author. It starts a little slow, but you care about Mike, a game warden with a troubled past that comes back to more than haunt him.
He has to decide how much loyalty you owe a parent, even one that was never there. It also means facing just how much you may be like them & it's not flattering.
Will definitely pick up the sequel.
