He was the first person to inspire her, to move her, to truly understand her. Was he meant to be the last?

Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story—their story—at the very beginning.
Lucy and Gabe meet as seniors at Columbia University on a day that changes both of their lives forever. Together, they decide they want their lives to mean something, to matter. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated—perhaps they'll find life's meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a thirteen-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and, ultimately, of love. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it choice that has kept them away? Their journey takes Lucy and Gabe continents apart, but never out of each other's hearts.
This devastatingly romantic debut novel about the enduring power of first love, with a shocking, unforgettable ending, is Love Story for a new generation.

"It's the epic love story of 2017."—Redbook

This book reminded me of a great Margaret Atwood line somewhere along the lines "when i was young i thought brooding moody guys were dark exotic and mysterious. In my 40s i realized they were just assholes." Lucy was more in love with the idea of Gabe as he was a true blue selfish asshole. Because they did not end up together for very long it was easy for both of them to idealise each other. I found this book very immature with its take on love. Good writing and interesting read but i couldn't really sympathize with either character. Pretty overwrought in some places!

4+ Stars
At 43%, I switched to solely reading, because the audio wasn't doing it for me and I think it was ruining the reading experience. After switching, I enjoyed the story so much more. It's a hard book for me to rate, because I read a lot of romance and therefore have certain expectations. Expectations that you don't always get with women's fiction. Ultimately, it was a heartbreaking read. Although the story elicited an ugly cry out of me, I found my emotions frustrating because of the decisions some of the main characters made throughout the story. I guess that's the mastery of the writer to make me feel for them. Overall, I enjoyed reading, regardless of the heartbreak and bittersweet ending.

This is one of the saddest books I have ever read, it was heartbreaking from start to finish, but it was SO good. I loved the characters, I loved their relationships, and it felt so realistic; like I was experiencing it right there with them. This is one book that stays with you, and I'm going to miss it when it's gone.

Life is about choices. How do you know if you're making the right choice? What would have happened if you chose differently? You can drive yourself crazy wondering "what if" but ultimately, you'll never know. I think these questions plague everyone at some point in their lives, which is why I was drawn into Lucy's story. The Light We Lost is told through Lucy's point of view and I think the author did an amazing job conveying her inner demons. I don't agree with all the decisions Lucy made, but I could understand how she got there. The most emotional part of the story for me, was when Lucy and Gabe broke up. Knowing full well what was about to happen, I still had hope, like Lucy, that things would work out for the two of them and I felt truly torn as her world came crashing down. I didn't feel that same chemistry between Lucy and Darren; because they're together for the majority of the story, I slowly lost interest. I wish there would have been a major twist at the end, but it turned out to be rather predictable from the beginning and left a few things unanswered. I experienced all the emotions with this one, but was still hoping for a little more. Overall, I'm glad I read it.

Wasn’t a fan of this one. I empathized with those caught up in the ‘Lucy Love Triangle’. Selfish needs, followed by poor decisions on her part, lead her down a path of toying with the men in her life, and ultimately resulting to an unhappy ending.

I continued reading this book only as a diversion from the other complicated book I was reading simultaneously. I really didn't bond w/ any of the characters which was frustrating. I did some feel empathy for Lucy at the end but what a toll she took on other people w/ her 2 relationships, demanding job and children.... The characters didn't use good judgement and made rather odd in choices. It does hold ones attention but a bit like a soap opera.

This is a book that will really pull you in to Lucy's world. It shows the truth behind the complicated and sometimes wrong decisions people make in life and really gets the reader to wander down possible alternative paths. Interesting read but I wasn't too happy with Lucy.

Read this in one afternoon. The writing is spectacular and really pulls you in. Definitely frustrating with the choices Lucy makes but it was a well thought out and written story. Worth the read!
