NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From the ingenious comic performer, founding member of Monty Python, and creator of Spamalot , comes an absurdly funny memoir of unparalleled wit and heartfelt candor

We know him best for his unforgettable roles on Monty Python--from the Flying Circus to The Meaning of Life . Now, Eric Idle reflects on the meaning of his own life in this entertaining memoir that takes us on a remarkable journey from his childhood in an austere boarding school through his successful career in comedy, television, theater, and film. Coming of age as a writer and comedian during the Sixties and Seventies, Eric stumbled into the crossroads of the cultural revolution and found himself rubbing shoulders with the likes of George Harrison, David Bowie, and Robin Williams, all of whom became dear lifelong friends. With anecdotes sprinkled throughout involving other close friends and luminaries such as Mike Nichols, Mick Jagger, Steve Martin, Paul Simon, Lorne Michaels, and many more, as well as John Cleese and the Pythons themselves, Eric captures a time of tremendous creative output with equal parts hilarity and heart. In Always Look on the Bright Side of Life , named for the song he wrote for Life of Brian and which has since become the number one song played at funerals in the UK, he shares the highlights of his life and career with the kind of offbeat humor that has delighted audiences for five decades. The year 2019 marks the fiftieth anniversary of The Pythons, and Eric is marking the occasion with this hilarious memoir chock full of behind-the-scenes stories from a high-flying life featuring everyone from Princess Leia to Queen Elizabeth.

You’re probably humming Eric Idle’s infectious tune right now. This wonderful autobiography of comedian, actor, author, songwriter and founding member of Monty Python’s Flying Circus is a joy to read. Idle takes us on a journey of love, laughter, creativity and loss as he candidly recounts his life from school, through the Python years, to his enduring collaborative relationships with a stunning variety of very creative people. His account of his friendship with George Harrison is truly touching and we cannot help but share his pain at the passing of Harrison. Through it all, Idle always reminds us that life has far more bright sides than dark. Know what I mean? Nudge, nudge.

I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I've never spent so much time alternating between grinning like an idiot and tearing up. Bless you and curse you Mr. Idle.

I love celebrity biographies and Monty Python. This book was pretty good on both fronts - most interesting was Eric Idle's experiences with many different celebrities over the years.

Eric Idle is a funny guy. HIs memoir does not disappoint; consistently candid and hilarious as he shares tales from his early years, the plethora of Python experiences, his enduring friendship with George Harrison and time spent with various other famous folk throughout his long and semi-illustrious career. Idle's joyfully irreverent wordplay and very English understatement, along with the naughty bits, made this an enjoyable read even during the sad parts.

Witty book. There is a steady stream of humor. I was born in 1962, and was a big fan of Monty Python. There are some parts early on where it gets bogged down with some early career details, but efforts to push through will be rewarded.

Very interesting and funny. EI is always a hoot.

People not familiar with English comics of the 60's might want to skip chapter 2. I almost didn't finish the book after reading that part, but I'm glad I eventually picked it up again.

Fabulous. Laugh out loud funny man writes a good tale of his life in comedy, the people he met and the ones he lost.
