I thought it was well-done, with outstanding performances by Maggie Gyllenaal and many others. The best thing about it was the portrayal of the complex politics of the middle east. It makes you lose hope.

Complex, tense story. What is the purpose of good will that may be destructive? Revenge and "cause" mixed. The interference of external intelligence. Israel, Palestine, US, Britain all for a peaceful solution?
Excellent performance.

With the plot twisting with each episode the main question of the series that was stated at each opening "Who can you trust and how can you tell" was answered in different ways. Most of the cases were where personal relationships and commitment to goals/ideals smashed into the reality of not being able to sustain both and a choice was made.

Since Game of Thrones has set a higher level of acceptance of violence and sex on mainstream media viewers of this series shouldn't be surprised by it's content. In all the instances that I can recall what was happening on screen did advance the understanding of the characters although sometimes in head shaking ways.

I was interested throughout the series as to what would be the outcome. Unfortunately there will be no Season 2 so the ending was the ending.

In the review by Dax, I was struck by the sentence, "I felt like I had stepped into somebody else's nightmare." That is profoundly accurate, for me. I've watched most of the series on the CBC, but try as I might, I can't identify with any of the characters, even the two main women. I admire their toughness and resilience, but I can't imagine surviving what they go through. As for most of the men, their icy cruelty seems almost psychopathic. I found myself muting the sound and even closing my eyes to the violence. Approach this one with caution.

I have mixed feelings about this flick. An interesting plot, but was drug out too long to hold my interest so I used the fast forward button through much of it. Maggie Gyllenhaal did not physically fit the profile of the character she portrayed. Her pasty round face with a bobbed hair style and gangly figure would have worked nicely had she been portraying an English girl rather than that of an Israeli woman. The constant weeping and gnashing of teeth throughout was distracting and overdone. The supporting actors were good and well cast. The last episode was the only part that really carried the day, making this a watchable flick.

Very dark. The first few episodes were so suspenseful I almost gave up. But it is an amazingly complex spy/ international intrigue story with difficult but plausible closure.

I consider this an excellent series for mature adults, though it helps to have some understanding about the tension between Israel and the Palestinians. Just don't let this story influence your views about the various nations/people too much - this is a work of fiction.
There are deep secrets that are only fully revealed well into the series. Exactly who the "bad guys" are - they promote and protect their interests with shocking ruthlessness - remains ambiguous until near the end of the series. This series could not have worked had the writer/director/producer taken a neutral stance - but I try to.

-What would your father think of today? I hope he'd be very proud. "The sword of Israel", and his daughter holding her hand out to the Palestinians?
Nessa: As I have continued to say throughout this whole process, anything that contributes to promoting stability in the region, I hope will be greeted with enthusiasm on all sides. And I believe it is.

Nessa: What are those?
Frances: Ceremonial shovels. The idea is that both you and El-Amin have one at the launch.
Nessa: OK.
Frances: The problem is, which one to choose. This one's Palestinian made. This one's Israeli. This one's got an Israeli handle on, but a Palestinian blade, and this one's the other way round.
Nessa: What you really need is a blade that's half and half, split down the middle, so that both sides strike the ground at the same time.

-You tried? With what? With what, Nessa? Cables? We need a nation.
Nessa: I always thought I had.
-Have you seen the hills? What they're building? Every day and every day? What you try don't change anything for my people. We need so much more.
Nessa: What else can I do? Do you need me to die?
-Me? Oh, no. No. But if it's the price... for a nation...I'm sorry to tell you, yes.
-The hatred you feel for me right now...only matches what I have felt for your people...all my life.
