Sparse language makes the reader create their own mental visual of the story. Yoon is a master at this in his story of a Korean soldier who was sent to Brazil by the UN to become an apprentice to a Japanese tailor

This tale, of a North Korean POW transplanted to a Brazilian town where he becomes a Japanese tailor’s apprentice, explores the strength and the limits of memory, the depth and the inadequacy of human connections, and the ways time both erases and adds meaning. It’s a tall order, and though there are beautiful sentences, the minimalist approach makes the task difficult to fulfill. But the characters retain dignity, even when uncertain of their direction.
