For the first meeting of the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society, six friends come together at Molly Matthew's old southern mansion brimming with excitement, ideas and cheese. Lizzie Turner is a reading specialist with a penchant for murder mysteries, but even she's shocked when a stranger walks into the meeting and is killed moments later. Not only has he been shot, but the weapon is an antique gun that belongs to Molly. As the plot thickens, the police chief - Lizzie's former high school crush - steps in to investigate. Soon Lizzie begins to find mysterious manuscript chapters in her mailbox. As she and the other book club members try to read between the lines, they realize that Molly is the next victim on the killer's list.

A nice read!
I always perk up when I see that a cozy mystery is about books. In this case, the main character is a reading specialist who is also starting a mystery book club. I enjoyed reading about Lizzie's job working with children and teens and the ways she found to encourage them to read. The quotations from different mystery stories, contemporary and traditional, were fun to see as headings for each new chapter. Lizzie's character is mature and believable as she tries to put together the many strands of the mystery with the help of her book club. I did find the story to be a little slow at times. The conclusion, for me, seemed a bit rushed and somewhat unsatisfying. Overall, though, I would say this is a good cozy mystery for a rainy NW summer day!
