I just read this for the second time and enjoyed it just as much , if not more. That says something for a repeat reading of a mystery. I have read all his books, and look forward to more. His author comments at the end of his books are always insightful.I just read this for the second time and enjoyed it just as much , if not more. I lost interest in the characters about half way through as most of the ones I liked or care about were killed off and did not like the plot between the mother and son to get rid of the others, so did not finish.

Leaving the library with a Michael Connelly book is like leaving with a box of See's Candy: you can't wait to get home a open it up. This one does not disaappoint. Although they all stand alone, it is best to read the series from the beginning as you understand the character and what makes him tick, when you really get to know him, especially his time in Vietnan. Or read a couple of the recent Harry Bosch series to see if you like his writing and then go back and read the first two. Louise Penny, Jacqueline Winspear and Martin Walker fans should enjoy this series.Leaving the library with a Michael Connelly book is like leaving with a box of See's Candy: you can't wait to get home a open it up. Found the younger generation characters tedious but loved Uncle Hugo. Interesting angle on the power of bullying and the possible results, so timely from that standpoint, but could not like the characters.

Tried this author at recommendation of a friend, but found some of the characters and plot "over the top." Did not care for the the objectification of women (see Wikipedia), Did learn a lot about bass fishing and there are moments of humor involved in the sport and the folks that enjoy it; (coffin made from a bass boat). Fairly gory so be prepared.Tried this author at recommendation of a friend, but found some of the characters and plot "over the top." I guessed correctly at some of the twists and turns, but enjoyed the characters and and variety of personalities and the inner workings of the minds of those that were a result of traumas they had experienced.

Great story and characters. On a par with Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Louise Penny. Hope the KCLS gets some of her previous works. This one lasted me 2 days. Those 111+ on waiting list have a real treat coming.

Better to read "Pardonable Lies" and "To Die but Once" to get the feel of the character, then go back and read this to get Maisie's background before WWI. The person who thought it was boring, might have started here, but once you have gotten used to the character, it is interesting to read of some of things that shaped her. Great feeling of the atmosphere before WWI. My US Marine uncle died the day after the war ended, from injuries suffered on patrol the day the armistice was signed. Buried in France.Better to read "Pardonable Lies" and "To Die but Once" to get the feel of the character, then go back and read this to get Maisie's background before WWI. I am continuing to enjoy this series, the charaters and plot twists, of which there are several in this one. As you get to know Maisie and her friends, she grows on you. Just delightful. One of those books that as you read you keep noticing how close you are getting to the end and regret there are not more pages. A wonderful format that switches back and forth between two periods in American history with characters that seem real and that you grow to love and understand, flaws and all. May be my new favorite series. Just discovered this book on a "share books" shelf, and plan to start from the beginning and see if the others measure up.

I did not like any of the characters and read to p.118 and quit. I like this author's other books, though with detective Tess M. and have read most of that series. I enjoy reading in order of publication, as you get a better understanding of the character.I did not like any of the characters and read to p.118 and quit. Great characters and good account of life during and after WW1. My first in this series, so now am starting with the first one "Maisie Dobbs" and reading in order. although each book seems to stand alone.

Vintage Harry Bosch. Great read. Go back and read his earlier books if you have not done so. Start with his service in Vietnam to really understand the character.
